The template adds articles to categories based on Arf invariant, bridge, crossing, linking, stick, and unknotting numbers (e.g. Category:Knots and links by bridge number), if values for those invariants are present (e.g. Category:2 bridge number knots and links).
- Arf invariant: Adds articles to category only if value is present.
- Braid length/braid number: Adds articles to category only if value is present.
- Crosscap number: Adds articles to category only if value is present.
- Crossing number: Adds articles to category only if value is present.
- Genus: Adds articles to category only if value is present.
- Hyperbolic volume: Does not add articles to category.
- Linking number: Adds articles to category only if value is present.
- Stick number: Adds articles to category only if value is present.
- Tunnel number: Adds articles to category only if value is present.
- Unknotting number: Adds articles to category only if value is present.
- Conway notation: Displays notation if present.
- Alexander–Briggs notation: Displays notation if present.
- D-T name: Displays notation if present.
- Dowker notation: Displays notation if present.
- Thistlewaite link table: Displays notation if present.
- Next/Last: For lower crossing number knots (31) use "next crossing" (3) and "next order" (1). For higher crossing numbers (where alternating or non-alternating is indicated: 12n242) add the name to "next/last crossing" and "
" to "next/last order". For links use "last link" and "next link".
- Alternating: Adds articles to category if value is present or not.
- Class: The template adds articles to the following categories if values exist: "hyperbolic", "satellite" ("composite", "cable", or "Whitehead double"), and/or "torus". If no value exists it adds articles to "Category:Knots and links", unless "nextlink=" is present in which case it adds "Category:Links (knot theory)".
- Fibered: Adds articles to category if value is present or not.
- Invertible: Adds articles to category if value is present or not.
- Pretzel: Adds articles to category only if value is present.
- Prime: Adds articles to category only if value is present.
- Slice: Adds articles to category only if value is present.
- Symmetry: Adds articles to category ("fully amphichiral", "amphichiral", "chiral", "fully chiral", or "reversible") if value is present.
- Tricolorable: Adds articles to category only if value is present.
- Twist: Adds articles to category only if value is present.
